Obituary

Charles Russell "Russ" Thompson, 83, of Union City passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City surrounded by his family.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Obion County Memorial Gardens. Brother Chris Gouger and Brother Melvin Poe will officiate.

Visitation will be held at Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Russ was born October 12, 1940, in Hickman, Kentucky, and moved to Union City in 1952. He was a 1959 graduate of Union City High School. Russ was the son of the late Charles E. and Alberta (Norris) Thompson. He married Carla (Land) Thompson on July 2, 1977.

Russ retired from the former Goodyear Tire Company after 33 years of service as Division C-2 Maintenance Area Manager. He worked at the former Homestead and Lawns & More before retiring as Maintenance Shift Foreman at Titan Tire in 2021.

Russ was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the J.T. Jones Sunday School Class. Before declining health, Russ was an active member of the Calvary Sanctuary Choir, sang special music, worked on several mission trips and served on various committees within the church.

He is survived by his wife, Carla Thompson of Union City; three daughters and two sons, Lori Griffin (Virgil) of Troy, Sherri Smith (Tommy Hutcheson) of Hornbeak, Patti Gouger (Chris) of Madisonville, Kentucky, Tim Thompson (Marlene) of Knoxville and Greg Thompson (Krystal Hammond) of Union City; his grandchildren, Bob Yates (Tamara Mangione), Russ Yates (Kristin), Misty Montgomery (Bryant), Paige Mangold (Taylor), Emily Gouger, Ryan Gouger, Daniel Gouger, Aaron Thompson, Lauren Thompson, Cameron Thompson, his great grandchildren, Connor Yates, Collin Yates, Levi Malone, Miles Mangold, Ruby Mangold and Molina Yates; his brothers, David Thompson (Wanda) of Abilene, Texas and Gary Thompson of Union City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Robbie Thompson Lofton; one grandson, Bradley Hardy; and his beloved fur baby, Carlee.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-9959 in honor of Russ' grandson Cameron, a St. Jude cancer survivor.
