Rita Louise Shaffer, 85, of Union City passed away 4:10 a.m. Friday, November 25, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Cumberland, Maryland.

Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Mrs. Shaffer was born March 5, 1931, in Cumberland, Maryland, daughter of the late John and Margaret (Barnett) Nine. She was the widow of Ronald Shaffer who preceded her in death June 4, 2016. Rita was a 1949 graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland, Maryland. She had been employed by Cumberland Telephone Company and was a homemaker. Rita enjoyed sewing, making crafts and collecting dolls. She was a member of Livingstone Church of the Bretheren in Cumberland. Rita was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Tracey (David) McConnell of Newburgh, Indiana and Kimberly (Scott) Dorton of Johnson City; one grandson, Kade McConnell of Newburgh, Indiana; one brother, Jack (Betty) Nine of Cumberland, Maryland; and her nieces and nephews, Lynn Largent, Denise Jadolwski, Diane Hartman, John Nine and Royce Clayton.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Shelby Lilya; and two sisters, Maybelle Faulkner and Betty Clayton.
