He was born January 23, 1925, in McNairy County, Tennessee, son of the late Luther and Timey (Wright) Jarnagin. Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1947 in Japan. After serving in the army, he returned to McNairy County, and then moved to Union City in May of 1947. He began barbering on "Punkin Island" in Union City and did so for 67 years, making him one of the longest active barbers in the state's history. In 2009, he received the Messenger's Readers Choice Award for Best Barber. Cutting hair almost up until the day he passed away, barbering was not just a job to Paul, it was his life's calling. Paul had a servant's heart, and used barbering to encourage, minister to, and love those who sat in his chair every day as well as those whose hair he cut in their own homes because they were not well enough to come to him. He was known by his customers as "Mr. Paul" and considered all of them to be his extended family. On April 29, 1951, he was married to the love of his life, Martha Sue Gardner. Even until the day he died, she was his first priority in life which made their marriage a beautiful example of Christ's love for the Church.
Paul was a humble-hearted leader in his church and community. He was a member of the Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and as a member of the choir for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Knights Templar.
Paul was a loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather, and is survived by 2 of 6 siblings; Sue Halbert, Charles (Jo) Jarnagin; 3 of 4 children; Paula Jarnagin, Barry (Patty) Jarnagin, and Donnie (Melanye) Jarnagin; 9 grandchildren, Brooke, Lyndsay, Jesse, Jedediah, Jonas, Joel, Sara, Hallie, and B.J.; and 2 great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by 4 siblings, Raiford, Josh, Hoyt, and Annie; and 1 child, Phillip Allen Jarnagin.
