Joyce was born May 17, 1936, in Clinton, Kentucky, daughter of the late John Porter and Mary Leron (Latham) Elliott. She married Wesley Thompson August 20, 1955. He survives. Joyce had been employed at Salant & Salant, Beth Ann's Fabrics, Lisa's Fabrics and The Stitching Post. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

During her life, Mrs. Joyce exemplified her spiritual gifts of service and hospitality. If it were singing in a gospel quartet, participating in church choir, working in Vacation Bible School, serving on the church decorating committee, or sewing costumes for children's choir, she always served faithfully with a joyful spirit. A pleasure of hers was to cook and entertain family and friends. People never left her home hungry. She always insisted that her visitors eat a meal or at least have a piece of her infamous chocolate cake and something to drink. For Mrs. Joyce, expressing Christian love and empathy to others appeared to be effortless. One could always expect a smile, hug, or kiss and maybe all three when greeted by her. Being an avid gardener, she delighted in keeping a manicured lawn with a variety of roses and other flowers. Making fresh bouquets for family and friends was another way she expressed her kindness to others.

To many she was known as Mrs. Joyce, but to her seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren she was known as MeMaw. Her grandchildren always knew fun awaited at her house. From playing board games to catching butterflies, she was very attentive to her grandchildren and valued her relationship with each one. Not only was her house entertaining, but it was filled with love. Whether it was making each grandchild's favorite lunch and dessert to sewing outfits or braiding hair, she ensured that each one felt important and special. Her loved ones will miss her dearly and always follow the legacy she left regarding the importance of family.

She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Mike Holman of Union City; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Buddy and Tena Thompson and Eddie and Elaine Thompson all of Union City.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Rudell Elliott, Hazel Elliott and Joe Ben Elliott.
