Mrs. Iva Jewel (Shands) Newton, 83, of Martin died 2:00 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.

She was born June 5, 1926, in Lauderdale County, daughter of the late Jesse Dalton and Bessie Mae (Lyell) Shands. She married L.B. "Shorty" Newton on December 28, 1946. He died May 17, 1975. She was a retired Certified Nurses Assistant and a homemaker. Mrs. Newton was a member of Second Baptist Church in Union City, the Faith Sunday School Class and the Young At Heart Group.

Mrs. Newton is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Becky and Brad Wilson of Martin; her son Larry Newton and Linda Hudson of Union City; her brother, Bernice Shands of Tupelo, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Amy Hernandez of Porterville, California, Lori Beth Wilson and Libbi Wilson of Martin and David Newton of Union City; and five great-grandchildren, Katie Edmaiston of Porterville, California, and Braden Newton, Parker Newton, Chase Vancleave and Ethan Vancleave all of Union City.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia (Shands) Poteet and her brother, Jesse Dalton Shands Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home. Brother Dwayne Ervin and Brother Eddie Mallonee will officiate. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery in Martin.

The family will receive friends in the Rosewood Room at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Paul Adams, Leroy Segraves, Jerry Leggett, Rick Bell, Chris Edmaiston, Eugene Edmaiston and Lyndell Caldwell.
