Mr. J.C. Gilliland, 85, of Union City died 12:45 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at The Med in Memphis.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home. Brother Chip Davis, Brother Hubbard Smith and Brother Jerry Leggett will officiate. Burial will follow in Cobbs Chapel Cemetery .

Mr. Gilliland was born February 2, 1925, in Obion County, son of the late Horace Clayton and Adeline (Haynie) Gilliland. He married the former Betty Rose Ransom on May 27, 1946. She survives. J.C. served in the United States Army during World War II and received the purple heart. As a young couple J.C. and Betty moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked as a union carpenter. Later they returned to West Tennessee and he started his own business as a building contractor. Mr. Gilliland was a member of Lake Road Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.

He is also survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Smith Wiggins and Richard Wiggins of South Fulton and Diana Gilliland of Union City; his son and daughter-in-law, James and Phyllis Gilliland of the Shawtown community; ten grandchildren, Jimmy Gilliland, Kenny Gilliland, Tammy White and Cheryl Brinkley all of Union City, Tina Moore of Obion, Tommy Halliburton of Troy, Laura Ellis of Dresden, Susan Powell of Birmingham, Alabama, Allen Smith of Tiptonville and Carl Smith of Davenport, Iowa; thirteen great grandchildren, Christian Higgins, Jenn White, Michael Brinkley, Nicholas Brinkley, Amber Moore, Timothy Halliburton, Tiffany Halliburton, Justin Baker, Chris Ellis, Mason Powell, Katelyn Smith, Allie Smith and Hailey Brook Smith; and his great great granddaughter, Ava Baker.

He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Carl Gilliland; three sisters, Ludine Goff, Betty Polard and Evelyn Turner; and three brothers, Willy B. Gilliland, Thomas Farrar Gilliland and L.H. Ladd.

The family will receive friends at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of services on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Halliburton, Jimmy Gilliland, Kenny Gilliland, Allen Smith, Justin Baker, Chris Ellis, Timothy Halliburton, Michael Brinkley, Nicholas Brinkley, Mason Powell and Christian Higgins.
