James. C. "Pip" Little of Union City was born in Obion County on April 13, 1937, to Dallas Little and Helen Chappell Little.
He graduated from Woodland Mills High School in 1955, where he loved to play basketball and met Elvin Hatch, who remained a friend for many years. In 1952, he had met his high school sweetheart, Mamie Jimerson. After graduation, he, like many others, moved to Michigan and worked for Ford Motors for several years.
On May 3, 1957, he returned to Obion County to claim his bride and take her back to Michigan, where they lived until 1962. At that time, they realized what they had left in Obion County and moved back, never to leave Obion County.
His love of sports grew and he was co-founder of the Obion County Central High School Booster Club. He played baseball and basketball in several local leagues until his 50s. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals.
When he moved back from Michigan, he worked for Kentucky Central Life Insurance Co. and later with Commonwealth Insurance Co. In 1968, he met Gates Maloney of Troy and was hired by Gates to work at his recently acquired Bank of Troy. Working at the bank ignited his love for helping others and thus sprung his love for civic work in this community.
He worked for the Bank of Troy for nearly 30 years before retiring as senior vice president. He graduated from the Banking School of the South at Louisiana State University. After retiring, he was hired by First State Bank.
He was a member of Troy First Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving in many capacities. During his years, he served on the Troy Industrial Board and Troy and Union City civic clubs. He was president of the Bank Administration Institute, Ken-Tenn Chapter, from 1983-84; president of the Obion County United Way in 1982; served as a member of the Obion County Board of Education from 1984-96; and volunteered with Chimes for Charity and many other organizations. He was also an honorary staff member for John Tanner, a 35-year member of Woodman Life Chapter 196 and a 30-year Masonic Lodge member.
He and Mamie loved to travel and camp. They traveled to all 50 states, Canadian provinces and Prince Edward Island.
He is also survived by a daughter, Whitney (Ron) Bagwell of Bartlett; a son, Stephen (Michele) Little of Humboldt; five grandchildren, Hunter Mann of Montana, Carlie (John) Kendall of Shawtown, Preston Little of Union City, Parker Little of Great Lakes, Ill., where he is in the Navy, and Slater Little of Humboldt; four great-grandchildren, Remington Mann, Maddie Mann, Oliver Mann and Brycen Little; and four stepgrandchildren, Destiny, Layla, Bubba and Easton Kendall.
He died in his sleep at home Feb. 10, 2021. This was not a COVID-19 related case.
