Obituary

Mr. Thomas Jack Flippen, 79, of the Shawtown community died 1:02 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2009, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home. William Denman, Leonard Blake and Rev. Jimmy Calhoun will officiate. Burial will follow in Cobb's Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Flippen was born August 18, 1930, in Obion County, son of the late Mordecai Thomas and Viola (Gray) Flippen. He married the former Diane Roney October 18, 1951. She survives. The couple had owned and operated Flippen Fruit Farms for the past 59 years.

He and his wife were the producers of Flippen's Fried Pies, which were featured on the Food Network and which gained a nationwide customer base. He was a premier fruit grower in the Southeast and his innovative ideas are still utilized by fruit growers throughout that area. He and his wife also hosted numerous large horticultural conferences at their Shawtown fruit farm. Mr. Flippen was a member of Mt. Zion Church of Christ, Tennessee Farm Bureau and The Tennessee Horticultural Society.

Survivors also include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Steve Killion and Suzie and Jim Hoover all of Shawtown; his son and daughter-in-law, Hayes and Kina Flippen of Shawtown; his sister, Jean Sharpe of Nashville; seven grandchildren, Clint Killion of Nashville, Kane Killion of Melbourne, Florida, Josh Flippen and T.J. Flippen both of Memphis, Amy Flippen of Martin, Niki Wherry of Troy and Dianna Flippen of Shawtown; seven great-grandchildren, Natalyn Wherry, Cayden Wherry, Jamison Wherry and Kingston Wherry, all of Troy, Chase Killion of Melbourne, Cole Killion of Nashville and Addison Flippen of Martin.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Prather, Marie Kendall and Gladys Moultrie; and two brothers, Evan Flippen and Gray Flippen.

The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Pallbearers to serve will be Brad Woody, J.J. Sawyer, John Sawyer, Bobby Joe Moultrie, Bill Flippen and Everett D. Hutchison.

Honorary pallbearers to serve will be Ted Kendall, Leon Barber, Everett Kirk, Jimmy Gray, Donnie Kendall, Glen Kendall, Mike Sharpe and Jerry Kendall.
