Obituary

Mr. Gerald Anthony Sumkowski, 76, of Rives passed away 5:36 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Visitation will be held at Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Church of God in Jackson, Michigan. Brother Jim Morrison will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Thompson, Robert Junior Sumkowski, Steve Sumkowski, Steve Bosco, Doug Lake and Ryan Oakley.

Visitation will be held at Desnoyer Funeral Home in Jackson, Michigan from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and at Jackson Church of God from 12:00 p.m. until the hour of services Saturday.

Gerald was born July 6, 1942, in Jackson, Michigan, son of the late Anthony and Donna (Vandam) Sumkowski. He married Cheralyn Kay "Shirley" Sumkowski May 19, 1962. She preceded him in death September 1, 2008. Gerald retired from the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Jackson, Michigan and Union City after 38 years of service. He then was a driver for Nortwest Tennessee Transit Authority. Gerald had served his country in the United States Marine Corps and participated in taekwondo at Lewis Institute where he earned the degree of second degree black belt.

He is survived by three daughters, Karen Stough (Dennie) of Union City, Gina Henry (Rick) of Parma, Michigan and Christine Brown (Gene) of Jackson, Michigan; two sisters, Cheryl Strzyzewski and Jeannie Sumkowski both of Jackson, Michigan; two brothers, Denny Sumkowski (Cindy) of Pleasant Lake, Michgian and Ron Sumkowski (Marci) of Napoleon, Michigan; 9 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Gerald "Jerry" Sumkowski; and one brother, Robert Sumkowski.
