Obituary

Charles William "Charlie" Grooms, 78, of Haysville, Kansas passed away 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at his home. He was a former resident of Union City.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home. Brother Chip Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery near Union City.

Visitation will be held at Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. until the hour of services Friday.

Pallbearers will be Bill Townes, Bill Austin, John Haste, Robbie Sexton, David Haste and Phillip Haste.

Mr. Grooms was born June 9, 1939, in Trenton, son of the late Hulon and Lula (Harrison) Grooms. He married Judy Ann (Ray) Grooms June 21, 1963. She preceded him in death August 2, 2014. Mr. Charlie worked as an extension agent for the Obion County Extension Office before retiring in 1997 after 31 years of service. He was a member of Western Sun Masonic Lodge #88 in Troy, was a member of Al Chymia Shrine Temple in Memphis and the Goodwill Shrine Club. Mr. Charlie served on the Obion County Fair board for more than 20 years and had been inducted into the Obion County Fair Hall of Fame and was a member of the Obion County Livestock Association. He had a long time association with the Obion County 4 H, the Obion County Civil Air Patrol and was a member of Lake Road Baptist Church near Union City. Mr. Grooms played an active roll in the Spring Heritage Days for many years.

He was also an early volunteer at Discovery Park of America, where he served as chairman of the Yesteryear Committee. He was instrumental in developing the areas which surround the 1 1/2 mile sidewalk that winds throughout the grounds. The Barn, a showplace for DPA's collection of antique tractors and a place to preserve the agricultural traditions and heritage so deeply rooted throughout the region, was his brainchild.


In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to Shriners Hospitals for Children .

He is survived by one son, Chris and Michelle Grooms of Haysville, Ks.; two grandchildren, Meagan and Robbie Sexton of Wellington, Ks. And Kristen Grooms of Haysville, Ks.; three great grandchildren, Lucas, Matthew and Liam Sexton; one sister, Mary Frances Haste of Trenton and several nieces and nephews.
