The family will receive friends at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be Mr. Powell's six grandsons: Jason and John Britt and Rob, Steve, Michael and William Powell.
Mr. Powell was born on October 16, 1920 in Kenton, Tennessee, the son of the late Robert Charles (Bob) and Rosie Lillian Mayfield Powell. He married Ruby Lancaster on December 23, 1939. She died on September 21, 1997.
Mr. Powell grew up with his three brothers and two sisters in Cayce, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Ruby; a granddaughter, Julie Ann Britt; and his siblings: Robert, Howard and Flynn Powell, Louise Powell Cullom, and Evelyn Powell Mosley Pewitt.
Mr. Powell, a successful farmer for over 70 years, was a member of the First Methodist Church in Fulton, a member of the South Fulton Kiwanis Club, and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Powell is survived by his daughter Betty Powell Britt of South Fulton; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Dianne Powell of Daphne, Alabama; and his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Carol Powell of Union City. He was the proud grandfather of six grandsons: Jason Britt of Plymouth, Wisconsin, Rob Powell of Columbus, Mississippi, John Britt of South Fulton, Steve Powell of Daphne, Alabama, Michael Powell of Park City, Kansas, and William Powell of Eldorado, Kansas, along with two step-grandchildren, Aimee Powell of Omaha, Nebraska, and John Powell of Wichita, Kansas. He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren.
A proud man, an honest man and a dedicated farmer, Mr. Powell attributed his roots and values to having grown up in Cayce the son of hard-working parents. Family members were often treated to stories about Mr. Powell's father (Papa, who lost his leg to a stalk-cutter and continued to farm and provide for his family) and of his esteemed grandfather, Dr. Robert Willis Powell, a dentist in Union City. High expectations and family standards, handed down by Mr. Powell's grandmother, Mary Francis Dean Powell, and Mr. Powell's strong desire to live up to the example set by his father, guided Mr. Powell throughout his life.
The family requests that memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Powell be made to Cayce United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 195 State Route 94 West, Fulton, Kentucky 42041.
