Mr. Billy Holmes Abshire, Sr.,83, of Union City died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home. Dr. Billy Skinner will officiate. Burial will follow in Obion County Memorial Gardens near Union City.

Mr. Abshire was born February 18, 1927, in Pemiscott County, Missouri, son of the late John Anthony and Seleta (Holmes) Abshire. He married the former Catherine (Edwards) on February 2, 1944. She survives. Mr. Abshire was a member of First Baptist Church in Union City where he was an Usher and Deacon and a member of the Carlton Sunday School Class. He was also a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Abshire was a retired salesman for the former Reelfoot Packing Company, had been a truck driver for the former Ligon Heavy Haulers in Martin and retired as a truck driver for Reynolds Brothers Oil Company.

He is also survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Danny Cunningham of Obion; two sons and three daughters-in-law, David and Judy Abshire and John and Mona Abshire all of Union City and Pat Abshire of Woodland Mills; seven grandchildren, David Abshire, Jr. of Cayce, Ky., Jennifer Pickering and Crystal Taylor both of Union City, Bradi Burnett of Nashville, Brad Abshire of Woodland Mills, Jeffrey Vaughn of Wingo, Kentucky and Melissa Vaughn of Paducah, Kentucky; his sister, Ruby Neely of Lockhart, Texas and twelve great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Abshire, Jr.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to First Baptist Church Care Ministry, 500 East Church Street, Union City, Tennessee 38261 or St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, Tennessee 38148-0142.

The family will receive friends at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Tom Cleveland, Frank Canale, Steve Emrich, Billy Crigger, Bobby Williams and Bill Flood.

Honorary pallbearer will be Daryl Erickson.
